The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to enable information technology systems in the healthcare industry.
HIMSS is widely known for its annual conference. while HIMSS22 APAC, Bali promised to be a reunion of the regional healthcare community and beyond to reimagine health and be the change.

What is the HIMSS-22 APAC?

Bali, Indonesia, famous for pristine beaches, invited Healthcare thought leaders and professionals for three days at HIMSSAPAC from September 26th to 29th to ideate, brainstorm, execute, build relationships and experience the community driving the healthcare digitization journey in this region of the world. The event was in-person, so we all could get a lot of face-time with each other all those zoom figures came to life for three days. For me, the HIMSSAPC was and always has been a great driver to push the digitalization agenda in Hospitals and healthcare delivery organizations.

The Minister of Health from Indonesia, could not make it to the conference in person, but his virtual message delivered was sharp and focused. According to him, Indonesia needs to plan a Healthcare digitization journey for all the hospitals, and the Office of Digital-transformation led by @Setaiji has been mandated to implement EMR and digital transformation for care delivery for the Indonesian population. His Mandate is clear to have Standardising EMR with FHIR by 2023. This initiative opens up enormous opportunities for the healthcare communities and professionals, to showcase their talent.

There were some interesting scientific sessions, organized for the HIMSS scientific committee, one of them that took my attention was around quality and governance and a study from HCAHPS, which establishes that Hospitals using digital technologies have a better customer experience than others, they presented the slide on, HIMSS Survey with HCAHPS rating talk about significant improvement for Patient experience in Hospitals using digital technologies with Platforms likes as below,

Care Transition- become more efficient
Communication about medicine- improve adherence to using the medicine
Discharge-higher satisfaction
Clean rating- cleanliness in digital hospitals is better
Doctor communication with Patients is improved
Nurse communication is improved

What is the HIMSS-22 APAC health conference outcome?

Cloud was one of the crucial conversations and buzzwords across the presenters, experts, panel, and exhibitors. AWS was present with senior experts from their healthcare team. They moderated a few discussions and kept the cloud conversation awake, as part of the hospital’s digital transformation plans. One of the panel discussions with Wonchul Cha from Samsung Hospitals, Korea, and Bachir Awad, from AWS Healthcare leadership, was centered around, how the IT infrastructure becomes a critical part of the digital journey for hospitals.

Dr. Wonchul represented the case study from Samsung hospital infram stage 6 & how they achieved it. As the Healthcare organization is adopting technologies, multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud will be at the core.I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Vikas Malhotra from the Delhi Government Healthcare initiative, and hear his views on the Government sponsored digitization journey for hospitals. I was full of insights with a clear idea that, if care improvement is the final objective and the government as sponsor believes in it, there is a way to build future-enabled hospitals. He is a Surgeon by training, a Healthcare IT expert by Passion, and a humble persona in itself, and, the two days spent with him were charitable.

Smile digital health Ducan & Clement introduced me to the exciting work they are doing with hospitals across the world on driving outcomes through data.They have built the practice for CDR using open-source technologies and are implementing it in various countries. They have under their belt some bigger hospital groups and State-run hospitals.

To sum it up, it was a great experience, and I came back with a strong message, to succeed in Healthcare digitalization you need an ecosystem of partners like VMware.

Healthcare stakeholders need to be clear about the pieces of foundation platforms to build the future of hospitals. VMware with its multi-cloud capability, workload management with hyperscalers like AWS, azure, google, and delivering success with GSI is a crucial partner on this journey for the hospitals.
